Fragments and hints for the site of the former Lenin Shipyard after a guided tour by city officials:
• Don’t block up the whole area! Space is THE democratic luxury for citizens. Most of what investors and architects imagine as built volumes should therefore be realized on the Martwa Wisla River. There floating blocks containing offices, residences and shops could emerge anlongside an architectural promenade. But in the centre open space should be generated – remember the Jean Michel Jarre open air concert!
• Don’t build a Solidarnosc Museum! A museum is an ancient, very expensive machine and in fact there is nothing to be exhibited... An old conference table, a Lenin bust... no more than theatre wings...
Solidarnosc is a story for books, films, DVD. What should be demonstrated is the living spirit of solidarity represented by Amnesty International, Médecins sans Frontières, Caritas and many other organisations.
• Core of the success of Solidarnosc against Soviet communism was Christian faith. Show this using clear, powerful images!
• Don’t build a tourist centre and more shopping malls, you have got already enough of this stuff in Gdansk!
• The „Road to Freedom“ concept is senseless!
• The protected historic industrial halls should simply become conservatories – public gardens for the long Baltic Sea winters.
