„Ruderal Garden“
Mighty structures border the Lustenau: the VOEST Bridge, harbor facilities, the Steyregg Bridge, the Mühlkreis Autobahn. The exit Chemistry Park / VOEST ALPINE takes up several hectares with ist ramps and roads on stilts. The middle is occupied by fallow land of spezial quality: space for ruderal plants, so-called weeds that stand in contrast with the very carefully cultivated allotment gardens in the surroundings. Added to this is the acoustic aspect: automobile traffic circuling constantly on different levels, crossed at intervals by rail transports... a 24-hour concert as homage to Jean Tinguely.
The unappreciated ruderal plants are the main point of the horticultural area, called „Botanical Garden Linz 2“, a branch of the Linz Botanical Garden, under the Autobahn. Enlargements of botanical master graphics presented in lighted display cases, show the full splendor of the individual plants and induce viewers to have a thorough look and to compare them with the living examples growing in the immediate area. A footbridge leads away from the almost magical green quiet of the ruderal garden to a level above the vibrating traffic and provides a view of the city center.
