The Place
The Lustenau industrial area is bordered on the north and east by the Danube. The winter harbor streches along the north, and from the easr – from the other side of the Danube – the thickly wooded Pfenningberg dominates the city. In the west the Mühlkreis Autobahn A7radically divides Lustenau from the center of the city. For a distance of 4 km there are only 4 approaches to the area. In the south the industrial plants of the chemistry park and Voestalpine create a massive finale – a „southern mountain range“. If one includes thePfenningberg in the city as a whole, Lustenau lies in the center of Linz.
The N-S length of the area is 3.3 km, the maximum E-W length 1.2 km. This gives an area of about 350 ha. At the beginning of the 20th century Lustenau held extensive old arms of the Danube and riverine areas, agricultural and horticultural businesses, occasional facilities such as a racecourse, barracks, a brewery and other small factories. Starting in 1938 with the building of the big steel and fertilizer plants, Linz became an industrial center. After the 2nd World War, during the years of reconstruction, Lustenau got ist present structure as an industrial area. The basin of the Linz harbor and the tank harbor were built and earth banks erected for the industrial plants an road system with the „Industriezeile“ determining the main traffic artery.
