Construction along the banks for the reservoir for the hydro-electric power plant Abwinden-Asten (1978) added ist imprint on the present character of the Danube. Lustenau is a part of the city in an intense state of change – tearing down, building up, filling in... Traffic by road, rail, and waterway. It is one of the most successful industrial sites in Austria.
Discovery of the Garden Potential
After a number of inquiries (on foot, by boat, with a bicycle, the view from Pfenningberg, from a hydraulic elevator 40 meters high) we became aware of layers, of the broad view from the form of the Lustena and finally came to the discovery of horticultural elements.In addition to hundreds of tiny allotment gardens we saw magnificent old trees standing alone, rows of hedges and tall bushes... the Danube, scenes of country life and the smoke clouds of the „southern mountain range“. The picture we expected of a stark harbor and industrial area interspersed with a few fallow patches, had to be adjusted. Contrary to urban zoning plans, the stratifications formed over decades which, if interpreted artistically, offer an opportunity for a unique transformation: the garden as a theme for the future development of the industrial area.
